Asia Society
Asia Society is the leading global and pan-Asian
organization working to strengthen relationships and promote understanding among
the people, leaders and institutions of Asia and the United States.
 |
They seek to
increase knowledge and enhance dialogue, encourage creative expression, and
generate new ideas across fields of policy, business, education, arts and
culture. Founded in 1956, Asia Society is a nonpartisan, nonprofit educational
institution with offices in Hong Kong, Houston, Los Angeles, Manila, Melbourne,
Mumbai, New York, San Francisco, Seoul, Shanghai and Washington, DC. |
| Asia Society Education Division's primary objective
is to integrate international knowledge, skills and languages into the U.S.
education system. Initiatives include the development of a network of state and
national education leaders committed to expanding international programs in
schools and the creation of a national initiative to encourage the teaching of
Chinese. Other initiatives include a prize program to recognize excellence in
international education and a model network of internationally-oriented schools
in inner cities around the United States. |
 |
To accomplish these goals, the Asia Society has
supported important legislation including the recent passage of the SMART Grants
and the TEACH Grants (H.R. 2669) and the America COMPETES Act (P.L. 110-69,
which includes provisions to encourage students to learn languages critical to
America's competitiveness and national security). In addition,
Asia Society has been concerned about our nation’s ranking on international
benchmarking statistics and has sought to educate decision-makers on this
critical issue.
